St. Barnabas Church tour.....

Lady Chapel

TWO WINDOWS (1921) BY KARL PARSONS.

LEFT:

MAIN LIGHTS:

Our Lady and St Joseph. Both hold the lily of purity. Our Lady is crowned, and with the customary seven stars; St Joseph is accompanied by the Dove (The Holy Spirit) and carries his bag of carpenter's tools.

LOWER LIGHT:

The Nativity (left) and The angel appearing to Joseph in a dream (right), "Fear not to take unto thee Mary as thy wife".

Our Lady and St. Joseph Elizabeth and Zachariah

RIGHT:

MAIN LIGHTS:

Elizabeth and Zachariah (with censer). Elizabeth was past child-bearing, hence, she is carrying what appears to be an empty nest, the sign of infertility. Subsequently she became the mother of John the Baptist. Zachariah was a priest at the Temple whose vision of an angel led to his becoming mute. He carries the censer and is dressed in red possibly because Eastern tradition has it that he was martyred by Herod.

LOWER LIGHT:

the Visitation of Our Lady to Elizabeth (left) and the writing of the name of John (right) by the temporarily mute Zachariah. Elizabeth stands over him while the child is held by a younger woman.
