The District of St Barnabas Beckenham was formed from the old Parish of Beckenham in 1877. The background is briefly as follows: The Chapel of nearby Kelsey Manor, the home of the Hoare family, was then served by a resident chaplain, Fr. Robert Linklater and subsequently by Fr Edward Pote Williams. Both were members of the society of priests, the Society of the Holy Cross (known as SSC). In conjunction with the Revd William Cator, it was decided to establish a mission on Oakhill on the southern outskirts of the village.. The temporary building was set up on Oakhill in 1878 serving what was then a largely artisan population. The District was established as a Parish in 1888. By this time a brick chancel had been built and, over the years, this was extended to a nave and Lady Chapel. The building was finally completed in 1933. The splendid Rood Screen and Cross were added at the turn of the century. The organ is by Bishop & Son, built in 1861 and transferred to St Barnabas in 1948. It was rebuilt in 1888 by Henry Willis and last restored in 1992. Due to war damage, some of the
older windows were lost although some pre-war glass remains. The new glass dating from
1952-1972 is all by Leonard Evetts. More details of the early history on the magazine page.
